In 2001, New York-based designer Marco Pasanella was 40 and decided he needed a change. He married Rebecca Robertson, a decorating editor at Martha Stewart Living, and they bought a run-down building in the Fulton Fish Market. It came with views of the Brooklyn Bridge and a fishmonger tenant, as well as 70,000 pounds of frozen salmon. He saw potential. After failing to find a new ground-floor tenant, he took a risk and opened Pasanella & Son Vintners, one of the first wine stores to market wines by pairing them with food flavors.
We follow Pasanella as he learns--and there is much to learn--about this seemingly crazy world he's entered, and he becomes ever more determined to succeed. We meet Janet, Pasanella's talented but chaotic first employee, whom he met at a Whole Foods cheese counter. There are the heavy-hitting distributors, the wheeling and dealing attorneys, the industry peers at wine auctions, the ample-bosomed sales reps, the oddball but passionate wine producers, and the fishmonger neighbors. And he leads us through summers in Italy with his family, the source of influence and his love of wine and food.
Marco's memoir of the birth, evolution, and daily life of the shop is charming, and we follow his transition as he becomes an insider in the underworld of wine merchants here and abroad. At its heart, this is the story of his self-reinvention.
The book also has a fun appendix that includes the 5 biggest misconceptions about wine; 5 tips on wine tasting; the 10 strangest words in wine; and more.
